During last night's episode of "Rock Star: INXS" I felt like I was watching "American Idol." Six of the 12 remaining contestants gave performances that were absolutely abysmal. The most noteworthy of these was J.D. Fortune, who until now had been the golden child. His rendition of Queen's "We Are the Champions" would've gotten him booed off of a karaoke stage, and with that performance, I suspect the inevitable J.D. backlash has begun.
Fellow contestant Brandon Calhoon was caught on camera showing disgust at J.D.'s post-performance excuses, but Brandon had no right to bad mouth anyone after butchering the Squeeze tune "Tempted" just a few minutes earlier. Truly awful.
Body art enthusiast Heather Luttrell had another bad outing, but a bad cold is at least partially to blame for her grating version of Sheryl Crow's "If It Makes You Happy." Cold or no cold, her performance has probably put her in jeopardy.
The award for worst performance of the night, however, goes to the ridiculously named Daphna Dove for her interpretation of The Clash's "Rock the Casbah." Not only did Ms. Dove look like she was wearing a maternity dress, but she sang the entire song in a completely different key than the house band. I suspect, however, that her much stronger past performances will be enough to save her from elimination.
Marty Casey and Tara Slone weren't quite as bad as the others with their versions of Nirvana's "Lithium" and David Bowie's "Suffragette City," but they were still pretty bad. Marty at least generated a little bit of energy during his song's chorus, but Tara is probably going to find herself on the chopping block one more time after yet again failing to establish a unique stage identity.
On the positive side, MiG Ayesa was the clear surprise of the evening. His funky reworking of The Kinks tune "Lola" was the night's highlight. MiG seems to be coming into his own just as J.D. is stumbling, and this karmic transfer seems especially appropriate given that J.D. bombed singing a song that MiG performed on a nightly basis as the star of the musical "We Will Rock You." (In fact, the Monday night closing credits of "Rock Star: INXS" showed MiG absolutely nailing the Queen song during band rehearsals).
Suzie McNeil finally showed some stage confidence while giving a great performance of Stevie Wonder's "Superstitious." She's showing lots of improvement since her first two performances nearly got her eliminated. If this keeps up, she'll be sticking around for a while. (She's also become my personal favorite.)
Ty Taylor did a fine job with his "unplugged" rendition of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts," and while the members of INXS heaped praise upon him afterwards, his performance still came off as entirely scripted, an annoyance the band has already asked him to eliminate. As good as his voice sounds, if he doesn't start making some changes soon, I suspect the band will grow weary of his refusal to follow their advice.
Jordis Unga sounded good doing The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin," but her last couple of performances, while fine, just haven't lived up to the promise she showed in the very beginning. The band members and Dave Navarro also let her off the hook for missing a line, something they've chastised other contestants for in the past. Double standards are never cool, guys.
That leaves Deanna Johnston and Jessica Robinson, who performed Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit" and Patti Smith's "Because the Night," respectively. Both performances were kind of boring, but the singers hit every note. On a night when 6 other contestants bombed, that should be more than enough to survive.
My Predictions...
Bottom Three:
Eliminated:
